The world of comics, graphic novels and manga has always been one I’ve never ventured into. Working in a bookshop has opened my eyes a little bit to just how popular they are but I get so overwhelmed trying to find something that I’m really drawn to.
Enter Webtoon!
Webtoon is an app that offers a huge selection of comics in one place. It’s super easy to use, free to download and has been a bit of a lifesaver for me during all of our COVID lockdowns. So, I thought I’d take a moment to share some of my favourite Webtoon comics that have got me itching to have a proper browse through the graphic novel section in a bookshop! Also, if you have any suggestions for graphic novels based on the comics that I’ve featured below, please let me know!
*I’ve included images of all the info you need to be able to find these comics on the app if you’d like to give them a read!

Lore Olympus
Witness what the gods do… after dark. The friendships and the lies, the gossip and the wild parties, and of course, forbidden love. Because it turns out, the gods aren’t so different from us after all, especially when it comes to their problems. Stylish and immersive, this is one of mythology’s greatest stories – The Taking of Persephone – as it’s never been told before.
If it’s not already plainly obvious from how much I bang on about how much I love mythology, I’m a big fan. This is probably my all time favourite comic at the moment and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys a bit of drama, a whole lot of romantic tension and puppy cuddles! This is the story of Hades and Persephone with a more modern twist and such a cool art style that I always look forward to the newest update. Also, as a side note, if you become as obsessed with this comic as I am you can always follow it’s creator Rachel over on twitter as she often posts draft drawing and sneak peaks!

Punderworld
Hades and Persephone’s love-struck misadventures.
Another Hades and Persephone one! This one focuses more on our favourite couple with a more classic take on their story. The art style also feels pretty classic and gives off a real old school comic book vibe. If you’re after something more traditional and fluffy then I can’t recommend this comic enough!

The Wolfman of Wulvershire
Lady Carina would rather be single forever than become any man’s baby-factory. So when she shows up at the Duke of Wulvershire’s annual Spring Fling wine and dine, it’s a shock to everyone – but not more shocking than the ensuing series of murders! Will Carina make it out alive, and, more importantly, will she find herself a hunky husband?
If you’re a fan of dark fantasy with a healthy dose of murder then you’ll love this comic. It gives me Castlevania vibes and features a super strong heroine who’s sure to stand up for herself, which I love. There’s also (as in most of these comics) a bit of a romantic undertone that I really enjoy as it adds another aspect to the story – and who hasn’t thought about how cool a supernatural boyf would be at some point?!

Unholy Blood
When vampires destroy her chance to have the normal life she’s always wanted, Hayan is forced to draw on her darkest secret to rid the world of the merciless hunters that took it over ten years ago. With the support of a raising star in the local police force, Hayan steps up to protect her loved ones, face her past, and get her revenge.
Another fantasy recommendation here! If you’re into badass vampires who owe you nothing then this is the comic for you. Think Buffy crossed with Blade and you’ve got something close to this – now there’s a crossover I’d love to see! This is another one for fans of Castlevania (can you tell that’s one of the only animes I’ve watched?) as it shares the same dark atmosphere.

The Little Trashmaid
Short comic strips of a mermaid in the modern day.
Ending on a much more fun and lighthearted comic. Every episode of this comic makes me smile as it follows the adventures of a little trashmaid as she makes friends with a human and seeks to understand our world. A super cute art style really brings this character to life and the attention to detail is one of my favourite things about it. This’ll also get you thinking about treating our planet a little better for all the little trashmaids out there!
Are you a fan of Webtoon? What are your favourite comics? Or maybe you’re a big fan of manga and graphic novels? Iโd love to know!
