So, it’s official. Exactly one month ago I turned 24 🥳
I’m not sure why but I’ve always looked forward to turning 24. It was always the age that I picked to be during the imaginary games I played with my friends when I was young. I can’t say why I picked it but here’s to hoping that it’s a good sign, many years in the making, that this year will be one of the best.
Anyway, back to what we’re actually here for… A BIRTHDAY BOOK HAUL! As a bookseller, my family point blank refuse to buy me books so it’s down to me to get the book mail rolling in. So this year I picked a few special things to treat myself to and here they are!
I recently discovered an indie bookshop based in Birmingham called Back to Books Brum who have a “radical, anti-racist, pro-Black, queer & intersectional feminism focus”! Despite working in the city and living in or around it for my whole life I’d never encountered this bookshop before so was delighted to order from there. I picked up…
What a Time to be Alone: the journal by Chidera Eggerue
I have both What a Time to be Alone and How to Get Over a Boy by this author so was super excited to see a journal that would accompany one of them. Maybe 24 is the year that I finally get into journalling?
This Book is Anti-Racist by Tiffany Jewell and Aurélia Durand
I’d seen this book so much but didn’t have the chance to purchase it before we went into another lockdown and I was furloughed, but what better time than now to change that? I’m really excited to get stuck into this one and to be able to return to work and wholeheartedly recommend it to customers.
And from my beloved Waterstones I ordered myself…
Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco
I read an eARC copy of this from NetGalley late last year and loved it so much I wanted my very own copy. However, it’s been really difficult to track down and ends up being sold out pretty much immediately. Luck was on my side now though and she’s now at home on my shelves!
Kingdom of the Cursed by Kerri Maniscalco
This was a pre-order to go along with my shiny new copy of the first book. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Emilia on her next adventures…
Starfell: Willow Moss and the Vanished Kingdom by Dominique Valente
I pre-ordered this book a little while ago and it turned up just in time for my birthday! I’m a big fan of this middle grade series so when the chance to pre-order a signed copy appeared, I jumped on it.
Also, perhaps going a little bit rogue for my last birthday purchase but I literally could not contain my excitement when I saw this. I signed up to Kickstarter to secure myself a copy of Crimson which is an art anthology from Abigail Larson.
She illustrates the most beautiful gothic scenes and I couldn’t bare to miss the chance to have this on my shelves.
What do you think of the books I picked? Did any catch your eye? What books have you picked up lately? I’d love to know!
You can always find me over on Twitter if you’d like to discuss this post (or any others that I’ve featured) in more detail 😌
