But now let’s get to what we’re really here for…

Coming in 2nd place for BBNYA 2020 is Fid’s Crusade by David H. Reiss!

Blurb: Even supervillains have lines they dare not cross.

If only the same could be said of heroes…

For more than two decades, the sight of Doctor Fid’s powered armour has struck terror into the hearts of hero and civilian alike. But when a personal tragedy motivates Doctor Fid to investigate a crime, a plot is uncovered so horrific that even he is taken aback. Haunted by painful memories and profound guilt, the veteran supervillain must race against time if he is to have any hope of confronting the approaching threat. Every battle takes its toll…but the stakes are too high for retreat to be an option.

Doctor Fid is one of the world’s most renowned supervillains, battling against heroes and building up his incredible technology to carry out his dastardly plans. But he’s not quite the hard hearted villain that he pretends to be and when he uncovers a threat that really pulls on his heartstrings, he can’t bring himself to leave it be…

The best way that I can think to sum up this book would be to tell you to imagine a story where Marvel and DC Heroes meets The Incredibles. That may sound like a slightly odd mix but combining extensive networks of superheroes and villains with the importance of secret identities and double lives gives you a pretty good insight into this book.

We meet Doctor Fid, dastardly villain and technological genius (are you seeing the Iron Man/Tony Stark vibes??) who uses his knowledge to build up an arsenal of dangerous weaponry and an, admittedly very cool, protective suit. We see him facing off against a whole host of Guardians (the ‘goodies’, if you will) in what seems to be a long standing back and forth plight before a much bigger threat is revealed… I absolutely loved this book as we get a glimpse into the origin story of a villain! We’ve seen it before on a more rushed scale on screen or in comic books but having it written out in full heart breaking detail had me on Fid’s side almost immediately. We get to see the villain for more than just the bad guy that we’re supposed to hate, we see his vulnerable side, his motives and even the lines that he refuses to cross. The thing I loved about Fid the most was that he’s not inherently a bad guy, just someone who suffered a loss and needed a way to deal with the anger that came with it. We’re immersed into this world of good vs. evil from the first page, where secret identities are worth everything and there’s lots of action and fancy sounding technical jargon that only works to set your imagination ablaze. With punchy pacing and intricate characters, this is another book that I’m so thankful to BBNYA for putting it in my hands.

Overall, I’d recommend this book to anyone who loves to dive into the world of superheroes and the villains they fight. Perfect reading for fans of the Marvel and DC Universes – take a chance and discover a brand new villain and his exploits!

Did you follow along with BBNYA 2020? Or maybe you’re excited for this year’s event? I’d love to know!
