Best of YA: Fairytale Re-tellings!

Hey guys! Working as a Children’s Bookseller, with a focus on YA, means that I’m constantly having to look at new releases and new trends and what’s currently popular – and I LOVE IT! Having a good knowledge of what books are on offer mean that I can offer the best recommendations possible to any customers who need a hand. Because of this, I’m starting a series called The Best of YA – lists of some of the most popular books on offer and some that I think are fab!

We’re kicking things off with a list of YA re-tellings. If you need a recommendation and a re-telling fits the bill, here are a few books to give you a head start!

  1. I like the ones that are less ‘Disney’ orientated, although it has touched on most stories. I prefer the Alice in Wonderland re-tellings and the ones that feature Robin Hood. I do like recommending Death Of The Mad Hatter by Sarah J Pepper, it has a wonderful book cover too.

      1. The Lunar Chronicles for sure! Also I think a couple of the red riding hood books will be super interesting, I don’t see adaptations of those a lot!! ๐Ÿ˜

  2. Authors K.M. Shea and Melanie Cellier each do great jobs building tales from fairy tales — totally recommend them!

Kitty (KM Shea) has an 11-book series called “Timeless Fairy Tales”, and she’s currently working through her “Fairy Tale Enchantress” series that follows the enchantress through the Timeless Fairy Tale timeline. The stories are extremely original, yet based off traditional fairy tales (book 1 of TFT is Beauty & the Beast).

Melanie has two series, titled “The Four Kingdoms” and “Beyond the Four Kingdoms”. I’ve only read the Beyond series so far, but it’s really, really good – and, again, refreshingly original!
