Starting Hannah’s Bookshelf:

I’d wanted to start a blog for a while but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to write about, had absolutely no idea where to start with creating a blog and was so worried that no one would actually read it 😂 When I’d graduated from university in Summer 2018, I was left with a lot of free time. The post-uni slump is real and the feeling of not knowing what to do with yourself combined with the job hunt was really getting me down. I wasn’t being successful in my job applications and really felt like I needed a creative outlet/something to do that would make me feel productive – so I started the blog! I was a huge reader when I was younger but during university, I was more focused on my seminar reading lists than reading for pleasure and that’s something that I wanted to change. Another motivation for me was that, when looking into applying for publishing/book related job roles, everyone I spoke to who worked in the book industry said that showing you have a love of literature and an awareness of the book world was important in being successful with an application – and what better way to show both than running a book blog! I finally took the jump and set up a twitter, instagram and tumblr (with tumblr as the main blog). I quickly learnt that tumblr wasn’t a great platform for me in comparison to WordPress (or something similar), but that’s what it’s all about – learning what works for you and what you enjoy. I’m now just over a month into my blogging journey and I’m loving it! I have so many ideas of things to come and am super excited for December so I can start posting Blogmas! 😂💖🎄

My Advice:

1. Engage with your followers and people you follow!

This is so important if you’re looking to boost your audience and to get more traffic onto your blog. If people are seeing your name pop up more often on their timelines and notifications then they’ll be more likely to stop by one of your posts or to include you in a tag. Engaging with other bloggers isn’t particularly hard as we’re all pretty supportive and happy to shout out anyone who’s kind and making an effort.

2. Post as often as possible!

Obviously, we all have lives and often times commitments get in the way, or maybe we just fall into a slump and run out of ideas but if possible, try to post regularly. If you’re a book blogger who’s main posts are reviews, you could always mix it up with tags, hauls, collabs or recommendations. You can always find some inspiration from other bloggers 😌

  1. I think tumblr is a hard one to get started on. I had thousands of followers on the blog I started in 2009, but when I tried to restart, I couldn’t gain any traction. It’s like people only want to look at images now.

    1. I definitely struggled with it. I’ve used it before and it’s been fairly successful but this time didn’t seem to take off 😂 I think often what people want is something brief, like an image so it can be hard to get consistent engagment but I’m sure it’ll pay off in the end!

  2. You’re so sweet, thank you so much for the lovely comments about me at the beginning! 😘
I love your reason for creating your blog – how amazing would it be for you to get a job because of your book blog?! If running a blog (which is just as stressful as a full time job sometimes) doesn’t show your dedication, love, and knowledge of the book world then nothing will. Hopefully it will help!
Your advice is spot on! I’m definitely guilty of not doing your second piece of advice. I’ve found that what makes it easier is posting twice a week with one being a book review and the other being a tag, it sort of takes the pressure off writing so many reviews and reading tags is always fun to read!
    Great post!

    1. You’re more than welcome!! I think having the blog was definitely helpful with being successful with my job in a bookshop 😂 I’m the same! I often find that when I’m in a busy period, the blog posts don’t get written but I also find tags so useful when you don’t have a big post to put up and it’s also super useful for engagement!
